projects around the house

purchased : sorting and ironing system.

we keep trying to increase the efficiency in the bathroom! this time, we were looking for an ironing board and came across this dual threshold ironing board and hamper at target. and it fits perfectly!

this is certainly not what i imagine my master bathroom to look like in the long term - it's getting so busy! - but we're going for functionality for now. the immediate problem with the ironing board is that it sits below our hand towel, so wet drippy hands could ruin the surface. i think we'll just be covering it with a towel or something for now, but i would love to make some sort of countertop for it so we could have more space to put things, but also have it be easily removable enough for when ironing needs to occur (we've been living in the house for over 6 months and just bought an ironing board an iron.. so it's clearly not a major issue..)

i couldn't find the unit on the website, but here is a picture of the packaging for those interested..

purchased : an over-the-sink shelf.

our bathroom leaves a lot to be desired when it comes to storage space. it used to be a giant cluster until we bought a few items just to help hold stuff. but trying to keep the sink from getting too busy, we still kept everything except the very essentials off in the side storage. this worked, but wasn't exactly efficient.

we eventually plan on completely re-doing the bathroom, but in the meantime, we saw this $20 shelf on a trip to home depot and decided to just go for it. it took all of 15 minutes to install (most of the time was spent figuring out how to get the drywall anchors in since it called for a 9/32" drill bit and we had a 7/32" and 1/4", but no 9/32" - james basically just used the 1/4" and wiggled it a bit... so precise, i know.) looks pretty spiffy!

if we ever invest in a decent or framed mirror or medicine cabinet, this guy will have to come out, but i certainly don't mind it. especially since i can keep my contacts and face creams within arms reach now.

purchased : a coffee table!

we'd been living without a coffee table (our apartment was too small for one honestly) and i was really holding out until we found one we loved. however, every one i loved was at the very, very least $500, which is just way too expensive, especially right now.

so after all these months, one day we were near a goodwill and decided to stop in just to see if we could get something super cheap that would just work for now. and we found the above table! it's super light, and was listed at $20. the very top surface is a crappy veneer, but the rest of it is actually all made from solid wood and pretty decent construction. it's old and a little busted up, and a bit wobbly. BUT, when we got to the cashier, it was a "manager's special" for another %25 off, so it ended up costing us $15! so, for $15, i think i can live with this little guy until i get around to re-finishing it (which i also intend for that other inexpensive vintage piece of furniture we got). oh the ideas!
